Health Benefits of Celery

There are many health benefits of celery.  It provides many of the nutrients your body needs to help you stay healthy.  Celery is a great source of vitamin C, which helps your body’s immune system fight off diseases.  Celery is also a good source of your B vitamins, including B 1, B2, and B6.  B vitamins give you energy to make it through the day.  Celery also has a lot of potassium and folic acid both of which are important building blocks to keep your body functioning properly.

Another one of the many benefits of celery is the large amount of calcium.  You need calcium to help build strong bones and teeth.  Calcium is also believed to be a very calming nutrient, which is why the philosopher Hippocrates always believed that celery calms nerves.  Celery has also been shown to lower blood pressure, which may be another reason it has such a calming effect.

There are also many benefits of celery that affect your organs and bodily systems directly.  For example, the large amount of fiber that’s in celery will help keep your digestive system regular and help you avoid constipation.  Celery is also very good for the kidneys, helping to regulate them and aiding your body as it eliminates waste through your urinary tract.

Celery is also a wonderful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.  Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, some arthritis patients in Japan are put on a celery-only diet to help sooth their joints.  Studies have also shown that celery extract can help relieve rheumatoid arthritis.  Celery has also been shown to clear uric acid from the joints, further reducing arthritis pain in the process.  Experts also recommend grated or raw celery for those who have swollen glands for any reason.

People who are trying to lose weight will also find many benefits of celery to enjoy.  Since it has a high fiber content, celery can be very filling.  While you get your fill of nutrients from a stick of celery, you can also enjoy the fact that the calorie count of celery is almost zero.  Celery also works great as a juice, especially for those who are trying to lose weight.  Did you know that you can suppress your appetite by drinking eight ounces of celery juice right before a meal?  Talk about a breakthrough for avoiding some of the temptations offered by huge holiday meals!

Celery juice is also the perfect electrolyte drink, offering benefits after a workout or to help replenish electrolytes after a short period of illness.

There are probably many other health benefits of celery that have yet to be uncovered.  Studies show that celery has large amounts of a type of compound called coumarins.  These compounds have been show to prevent cancer and give a boost to white blood cells to help them work better and more efficiently.  Because of these compounds, celery may even have applications one day as a migraine reliever.  Celery is also great for detoxification and may lower cholesterol.
